The Lehigh ADVANCE Leadership Team directed the program under the leadership of Principal Investigator, Provost Patrick Farrell to implement programs and work with faculty leadership and trustees to revise university policies. Meet the members of the team and learn about their roles in Lehigh ADVANCE.

Patrick V. Farrell, Chair of Leadership Team, 2010-2016

Patrick V. Farrell was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Lehigh University from July 2009-July 2020. Previously, he was at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for 27 years. He received his BSME from the University of Michigan, MSME from the University of California at Berkeley, and his PhD at the University of Michigan. Professor Farrell’s research involved combustion, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, and applications of optical diagnostics to internal combustion engines. He served as the Principal Investigator for Lehigh ADVANCE.

Mooi-Choo (Mooi) Chuah

Mooi-Choo (Mooi) Chuah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. She received her PhD from the University of California, San Diego and her bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Malaya in Malaysia. Her research interests are disruption tolerant network design, mobile social network protocol design, network security, and social network data mining. She established and manages the Wireless Infrastructure and Network Security (WiNS) Lab and serves as Co-Director of the Computer Engineering Program within the CSE department at Lehigh. Dr. Chuah holds 58 US patents and 8 international patents in various areas including mobility management, QoS enhancement to IP-based protocols, MAC scheduling, and traffic management. In addition to numerous professional service activities, Dr. Chuah serves as a Lehigh ADVANCE Chair providing valuable insights and direction in the project’s first year.

Diane Hyland

Diane Hyland, Professor of Psychology, is the Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff in the College of Arts and Sciences. A member of the faculty for nearly 30 years, Diane has taught courses on child development, adult development and aging, psychology of gender, and social research. Over the course of her career at Lehigh, Diane has served as Chair of the Psychology Department, Director of the Center for Social Research, and Interim Director of Women’s Studies. Outside the classroom, Diane has been an energetic member of the university community, serving as a mentor to junior faculty and taking leadership roles on numerous committees. She is a Lehigh ADVANCE co-principal investigator seeking answers to social science research questions related to the gendering of preferences for and career consequences of engaging in collaborative and interdisciplinary research in STEM fields.

Jackie Krasas

Jackie Krasas is currently Director of Women’s Studies and Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. As Director of Women’s Studies she has worked to expand the program from an undergraduate minor in 2005 to one that now includes both an undergraduate major and an interdisciplinary graduate certificate. Her scholarship focuses on gender, race and employment inequality, masculinities, work and family, and non-standard work. Prior to coming to Lehigh University, she was Associate Professor of Labor Studies and Industrial Relations at Penn State University and directed the Industrial Relations and Human Resources graduate program. Prof. Krasas received her PhD in sociology with a specialty in gender studies from the University of Southern California. She is a Co-PI. She is also a 1987 graduate of Lehigh University.

Marci Levine

Marci Levine is the Lehigh ADVANCE Project Manager. She has six years of scientific program management experience at an international non-profit organization to promote the use of sound science in food safety and nutrition public health policies across industry, academia and governments. She earned a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from Purdue University, focusing on molecular nutrition. Marci is excited to be a part of the institutional transformation anticipated at Lehigh University through the NSF ADVANCE grant.

Pat Mann

Pat Mann joined Lehigh in May of 2003. She held several administrative positions in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, such as Operations Specialist and Business Manager. In August of 2009, Pat was appointed Administrative Director in the Office of the Provost. She provides leadership and administrative oversight for staffing, budget and office processes and procedures, and manages administrative systems and projects. Prior to joining Lehigh in 2003, Pat was with Bethlehem Steel Corporation for close to 30 years where she held several executive administrative positions supporting top level management within the Corporation.

Henry Odi

Dr. Henry Odi earned his BS in Business Administration, a minor in Mathematics, and his MSEd from Millersville University, PA. He holds an EdD in Education/Administration from Lehigh and is a 2004-2005 American Council on Education Fellow. For the past twenty-four years at Lehigh University, Dr. Odi has held several key positions. Currently, he is Vice Provost for Academic Diversity and Adjunct Professor. He served on NSF Proposal Review Panels and a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Panel on Diversity. He is the founder and co-founder of several academic programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. He is currently PI of a $1.3M National Science Foundation funded project at Lehigh University to enhancescience, technology, engineering, and mathematics and on the NSF ADVANCE Grant Leadership Team. He has also served as co-PI and co-Director of four NSF funded STEM projects totaled $6.1M and NASA and PA Space Grant Consortium Grants totaling over $200,000. He provided leadership for the past several years in raising over $25M for scholarships, undergraduate research and support for STEM Ph.Ds.

Sibel Pamukcu

Sibel Pamukcu is a Professor and Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. She has been a faculty member of the department for 25 years. She received her BSCE from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and her MSCE and PhD in Civil Engineering with concentration in Geotechnical Engineering from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Dr. Pamukcu conducts research on soil and groundwater decontamination using electrochemical technologies, and on development and application of fiber-optic sensors for distributed measurements in geo-media and civil infrastructure in subsurface. A worldwide expert on electro-remediation of soils and groundwater for more than a decade, Dr. Pamukcu co-owns multiple patents in US and abroad. Her recent work includes development of underground wireless sensor networks for detection and quantification of geo-hazards and smart geo-systems for mitigation of contaminant transport in soils. As Co-PI of the grant, she will lead Lehigh in the creation of a regional network of Women in Science in Engineering and assist in the organization of the academic symposia. Dr. Pamukcu is currently co-Director of Lehigh ADVANCE.

M. Jean Russo

Dr. M. Jean Russo, Senior Research Scientist/Scholar at the Center for Social Research, serves as the Internal Evaluator for ADVANCE. She will examine the impact of program activities on recruitment, retention, and advancement of women STEM faculty members. Dr. Russo has experience with all aspects of evaluation, including evaluation design, questionnaire development and testing, data collection and management, data analysis, and preparation of evaluation reports. Dr. Russo has conducted numerous evaluations funded by the National Science Foundation and other federal and private agencies. From 2007 to 2010, she served as Project Director for The Family Study, a longitudinal study spanning 30+ years, which recently completed a fourth wave of data collection. She was also editor and contributing author for a two-volume series that included selected works of Donald T. Campbell, a preeminent social science scholar.

Jeffrey A. Sands

Jeffrey A. Sands, Professor of Biological Sciences, has an extensive research background studying viruses, bacteria, and fungi since the 1970’s, while advising and mentoring 15 Ph.D. students who went on to academic and research careers. Over four decades, he has taught a wide array of courses, including general physics, molecular biophysics, genetics and molecular biology, and advanced virology. Between 1988 and 2008, he served three terms as department chair, and he recently completed an appointment as an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a Co-PI on the NSF ADVANCE grant to Lehigh, collaborating broadly with other members of the leadership team on strategies designed to reach the specific goals of the program, including organization of the academic symposia. Susan Szczepanski

Susan Szczepanski is an Associate Professor of Mathematics. She received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and spent two years in a postdoctoral position at M.I.T. before joining the Lehigh faculty. Her scholarly interests are geometric topology and singularity theory. She has participated as co-PI and senior personnel on two NSF-funded projects partnering Lehigh University STEM faculty and graduate students with teachers in Lehigh Valley area school districts. For the last four years, she has also served on the Faculty Personnel Committee. A unifying theme of Dr. Szczepanski’s service on college and university committees is a belief that faculty and University administration share the responsibility to develop and to implement institutional policies and procedures that ensure an inclusive community and foster a supportive environment for all members of that community. She serves as ADVANCE chair in the first year.

Jean Soderlund, Director Grant Year 1

Jean Soderlund is a historian of 17th and 18th century British America, with special interest in questions of ethnicity, gender, religion, and class. She has authored Quakers and Slavery: A Divided Spirit, co-authored Freedom by Degrees: Emancipation in Pennsylvania and Its Aftermath and American Passages: A History of the United States, and has published articles on women in colonial British America. Her current scholarly project is tentatively titled "South River: Native Americans and Colonists in the Development of Delaware Valley Society 1631-1767.” As Lehigh’s first Deputy Provost for Faculty Affairs from 2005 to 2010 she served as Principal Investigator of the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility. She served as Project Director of Lehigh ADVANCE for 2010-2011.
