Critical Listening: A guide to common misunderstandings and red flags about how to improve diversity

You are here

Use this guide to help identify common misunderstandings that surface when people talk about how to increase the participation of women.  Learn to spot "red flags" that indicate a particular discussion is headed in a direction that may not be research-based or effective.

Not all approaches to increasing diversity are research-based or effective, so NCWIT compiled this tool about ways to really listen to what you're hearing when colleagues make statements about diversifying the faculty. NCWIT describes the Critical Listening Guide: "This guide is intended to help you identify common misunderstandings that surface when people talk about how to increase the participation of women (and other underrepresented groups) in technology. Use these tips to help you spot statements that might be "red flags" or a sign that the discussion is headed in a direction that is not research-based."
