There is a gap in research examining the gendering of intellectual preferences for and professional consequences of interdisciplinary science. The Lehigh ADVANCE Social Science Research Team will explore the effects of interdisciplinary organization on promoting the careers of women STEM faculty. Results of the investigations will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national scholarly conferences.

Gendering of Research Preferences, Activities, and Outcomes
This study will compare and contrast career advancement and perceptions of men and women faculty in STEM at institutions similar to Lehigh. A bibliometric study will examine the effects of interdisciplinarity and gender on publication history, an indicator of research productivity.

Gender and the Labor Process in Interdisciplinary Clusters
Through this study of Lehigh faculty, both the material and social organization of work will be analyzed through the lens of interdisciplinarity.
Expected Results
Through these studies, Lehigh ADVANCE will contribute qualitative and quantitative data to help understand how trends toward scholarly interdisciplinary study may enhance or impede the recruitment, retention and advancement of women faculty in STEM fields.
